The Dream That Held On
I’m not always sure what it takes to be a writer. Sometimes I think it only matters that you have something to write about. Other times it feels imperative that you are in the right state. Oh but it could also be that you need to have all the materials. But do you want to know the truth? The most important thing of all of this is that, first and foremost, you are in the right state. I don’t agree with popular opinion that you just need to write whatever mood you are in. That works with some things but with writing, it requires a particular experience — an inward experience out of which comes the ability to pen the best ideas, lyrics, or whatever — for you, that is — ultimately leading to a completed draft. I find myself in that experience today. From that I have devised a writing topic, picked out all the materials I will use and share with you the truth of something I have never spoken to before. And here we go.
Years ago, I wanted my first motorcycle. I thought about it in the states while I was traveling. I considered it from many angles and possibilities rose up from all over the place. I would watch television about it, think about it, talk about it, imagine it, ask questions to people I didn’t know about it, on and on and on. Now, the idea stayed there in the back of my mind for all that time and evidently has been staying with me all the way into even now and where the future has been planning on taking me next.
That is, the idea has been so ingrained in my mind and heart and soul, not only have I wanted a motorcycle but also a motorcycle vest of the leather variety. Now, to be clear, I don’t fancy myself as an outlaw; that’s never been my crowd. I mean, growing up, I was always the musician type, although I could never carry a guitar on my back as I never learned to play the guitar.
Instead, I imagine myself, with my Metalody symbol on the back of the vest, my ableton push 3 in the side saddles of my bag, my girlfriend in the passenger seat, riding across all kinds of terrain in all kinds of weather getting to where we want and/or need to get to do what I want as the musician I know myself to be. I keep the idea with me.
Now, let me be clear, I haven’t ever been that fond of adventure bikes or speed bikes. No, those weren’t ever my style. My bike is and always has been the cruiser.
To be honest, I need to let you in on a little secret …
I’ve never even driven a motorcycle outside of the motor-scooters driven all around in different parts of the world.
But I have made sure to never let that stop me.
Now, please allow me to set the stage for a moment. I was traveling the world over when I met my girlfriend. In time, we began living together in her beautiful home country where I have already gotten my motorcycle license – a task I was told by multiple people would be impossible as a foreigner in this part of the world.
I made sure to never let that stop me.
Being here, my love for the bike has only grown … so much so that my love for this motorcycle has brought about an appetite in my body for this experience so strong that the manifestation has made its way into all corners of my experience. My girlfriend and I have officially made a commitment to making this dream of mine happy. Officially being together one year today, throughout this time, she and I cannot count the ways that we have been able to be there for each other, ultimately leading to yet another time that she and I can be there for one another … we have become determined to get this motorcycle for me.
So, here’s the rub …
All that thinking and talking and imagining for a motorcycle I have been doing has led to she and I creating a “Dream Motorcycle” box. The rules of the road, in this case, are this – any money that goes in does NOT come out … until the amount for the bike I want to get is reached. No emergencies, no extra food, no gifts, no nothing. The box is closed with a small slit for bills to enter, sealed, glued, and permanently closed so that the only way to get the box open is to break it entirely ... and to do so is to break the very covenant the box was conceived upon.
So now, we wait.
And we count.
And we count the days for the moment the box contains the amount we need for the extraction process taking place.
I already have my motorcycle license which means the only thing left to do is show up with the cash in hand and ride that beautiful thing off the lot. We are looking forward to it, and this project will be happening together and yet another thing adding to and strengthening the very foundation this relationship is and has been built upon.
Hopefully you hear about the completion of this project the next time you catch up with us. I’ll see you on the other side! Sound good? Great.
